A very nice, small cook set for 1 or 2 people

A very nice, small cook set for 1 or 2 people when you need to save on space and weight. The cook set runs on Esbit fuel tablets (Hexie), alcohol or small wood shavings if you run out of the others! I have not tried it yet but it does look like you can also use Bio fuel?A boil-in-the-bag (you can just fit 2 bags in there) takes around 10 - 12 minutes with alcohol, as long as you can shield it from the wind!Tip:If you use a heat mat, (I stole mine from the wife) to cook on, in your tent(alcohol/spirit ONLY - NO HEXIE INSIDE YOUR TENT), you can stay warm and dry in your tent with this cooker.I would have been happier if:1. The pots where made from Stainless Steel2. It also had another small bag for the cooker, as its fits inside the pots (to keep the pots clean)These are very small points, as I am never happy!

great all round

This is a great product that I have used on a number of occasions. It is more stable than the pocket rocket, its predecessor, but is still smaller and lighter. I thoroughly recommend it!

Simply Superb

This is a great little stove and is a definite improvement on the PocketRocket.It's smaller, lighter and uses a great "fold-down" method for the stove/pot legs. The container fits inside the plastic insulated MSR mug I have so that's useful. The flame is a bright blue and boils a litre of water in a couple of minutes. The flame can be easily managed and it's easy to simmer liquids for those who appreciate their gourmet food. On the "crown" of the stove the grille has a triangular divider, this ensures that even in high wind the flame won't blow out... clever eh? I have the MSR Universal Canister Stand which weighs nothing and adds stability, another great MSR product. The little piezo igniter is a little gimmicky but it's not heavy and it's easier than using a lighter or firesteel. Obviously you should have at least one other method of making fire with you.

At last, an FFD cooker in the UK

Whilst, I was lukewarm about the normal version of this cooker, it having no windshield, this version more than makes up for it by having the STOPGAS feature and so is technically useable indoors (IN A LARGE WELL VENTILATED ROOM). About time!.Campingaz, only sells these in France and Germany, the UK being not thought of as suitable to have this safety feature. Shame on them.Good cooker. Use outdoors on a camp kitchen to get protection from wind.Uses inexpensive CP250 original or clone cartridges. (Campingaz original ones are 250g and copies are usually 227g)

A really useful fuel source- whatever happens to the main power supply- gas or elctricity- you can rely on campingaz and a portable stove to make tea and cook up a feast! Long lasting, clean, portable, easy to store- never leave home without it- or indeed, risk a winter power cut without one at home.

Good little bag, fits the trangia in fine with a bit of room, i put some utensils in there as well to keep it all together. Best thing is it prevents any residue from fuel getting everywhere in your pack if it can't be cleaned straight away.

No one should hike without it

probably the greatest hiking and camping tool ever made. This would be the last think I would take out of my pack to lighten the load!.I boiled a pint of water within 5 minutes with a few sticks and pine cones that I collected along the way. I didn't need to rely on fuel I carried with me.If you go rough country camping or hiking and want a civilised cup of tea of coffee along the way this should be your choice for boiling water. This would be come even more useful if you are using dehydrated foods!

A very convenient and no nonsense product

I have three Kelly Kettles which I use under different circumstances, the large, the medium and this small, one pint kettle. I would award both the large and the small Kelly Kettles 5 stars. The large is more suited to permanent locations or for using from mobile transportation and when larger quantities of water are required, the 1 pint kettle is small and light enough to carry around on a back-pack but can provide adequate hot water for most requirements. It is easy to refill and continue heating water on an already kindled base.The ratio of the height to the diameter of both the small and the large kettles creates an ideal "draw" of air to give good fuel combustion. I cannot say that of the medium, more squat, version. I have no problem with these aluminium kettles. Aluminium I consider to be the most suitable material to use for heating water.The 1 pint Kelly Kettle is a very convenient and no nonsense product!

I recently purchased this marvellous piece of kit. No more need to carry about fuel in the form of gas canisters or mess about with spirit cookers.This compact water-heating and food cooker is just the job for short excursions - over-night stays in the country or camping/picnics etc.It burns practically anything - I tried pine cones, sticks and even dry japanese knotweed dry stems. The draft through the chimney draws the heat in the base up through the chimney, heating the water in the water-jacket and at the same time you can heat your food on the top using the accessories - pot, pan or remove the kettle part once water is hot and use the 'fire-base' with a grill over it. The water heats very quickly and once you get used to using it, you can keep a constant supply of hot water flowing by regulating the amount of fuel you burn.Great piece of kit - 10/10!!Small 'Trekker' Kelly Kettle® Alu. I've just bought this. It arrived last night so had to wait until this morning to try it. Tried it on the concrete drive. Plumping boiling water in minutes. Although I was using water from the garden tap I allowed the kettle to boil the water for several minutes as would be the case for stream water when it is necessary to purify by boiling. It is recommended to throw out the boiled water after the kettle is used for the first time.For me, I found that the best way to set the tinder in the fire base was to use some dry paper in the base and adding some long twigs down the chimney. This works great as the flames from the paper fully fill the chimney section and have a better chance of setting fire to the twigs there than if they are broken up into small sections and laid directy on the paper in the fire box. Do not block the chimney as a draught is required. Once going just keep adding fuel down the chimney.If you don't have a problem with the extra weight it might be an idea to fill a thermos type flask for hot water later in the day. Clearly this would be for an extended trek of several days where easy access to hot water for a day-flask might not otherwise be available.With all this burning the chimney and firebox of the kettle do get dirty. Excess water can be used to extinguish and clean the loose ash from the fire box. I would suggest that even well wetted ashes be buried in a small hole so that there is no possibility of setting fire to dry material such as dead grass, don't want to be looking back from several miles up the trail to see smoke rising from your morning campsite. Leave the inside of the chimney dirty, the outside of the kettle will be clean and all will be going into the supplied draw-string carry bag.If you use matches to start the fire get into the habit of popping them down the chimney as additional fuel, that way they will not start a fire in that nearby dead grass.Great item, now I can use that mirror compass and hot water for a wilderness shave each morning followed by hot coffee or tea.A pot support can be bought for this kettle but I would not want to fit it into the chimney as the fire needs a constant supply of fuel(down the chimney). In most cases the water will be boiled long before you will get anything cooked on a pan or in a pot being heated above the chimney.I would only use the kettle for a supply of boiling water that is therefore hopefully free from dangerous living microbes. The tea, coffee etc are mostly to give the boiled water a flavour.

Simple, Basic and above all Reliable

As you'll probably know, keeping your kit simple is vital when you're away from civilisation because you can't go and buy a new valve or hose or nozzle if it breaks and this is why I opted for a Trangia over other higher-tech stoves. I've used other stoves in the past but they invariably stop working when you need them most. With this stove there's almost nothing to go wrong.The stove itself consists of 2 metal cylinders that lock together to form a base and a windshield, and a burner that sits in a hole in the base. The burner is just a metal pot that holds the fuel (meths or similar).The rest of the kit is a series of pans and a kettle that sit inside each other. You will need to buy a secure fuel bottle separately and Trangia and others make them. I've seen people using these stoves with meths in the plastic bottles you buy it in from the hardware shop and in my view that's asking for serious trouble.Light the meths, rest a pan over the flame and that's it. You can control the flame with a metal flap over the flame but that's the only moving part in the whole arrangement. The windshield makes sure that the stove works in just about all conditions.This version of the stove is the ultra-light (UL) version which is very compact and light when you consider it's a complete cooking kit for up to about 4 people. I use it for 2 people because the kettle is a decent size while on the smaller Trangia the kettle's too small in my opinion. The difference in weight between the small and large version is only about 250-300 grams which is noticeable but not huge unless you're desperate to save weight.There are 3 small drawbacks to this stove, hence it loses a star.Firstly, spirit burners are slow compared to other methods, taking over 10 minutes to boil a litre of water, but compared to gas at low temperatures or in windy conditions it's actually not bad and for versatility or speed you can buy converter kits to make it work with gas or a pressurised multi-fuel system (expensive mind you!).Secondly, the burner needs to be cool before you pack it away and it can take a while to cool down so you need to allow for this. Just a minor issue.Thirdly, it's quite expensive for something so simple. Ok it includes pans and a stove in one, but most of us already have pans.Small criticisms aside, it's a well made and reliable stove and I expect I'll be using it for years because I dont know how I can break it.

I've been using my Trangia 25 stove for nearly 30 years, so it hasn't cost me much on an annual basis. In that time, I've replaced the burner once after I crushed the original by driving over it. Also in that time, it has thrived and survived while several gas and petrol-powered competitors have fallen apart, ceased to function or been shelved due to one annoying fault or another. My Trangia has always been the the best stove for a picnic or a light camp or the reliable fallback when the gas ran out. A classic, hardwearing design. If it was a car it would be an aluminium Volvo.7 Tips:1 Buy the fuel bottle for safety and convenience but don't screw the black tap in too hard or you'll really struggle next time you need to fill up.2 The screw-on lid of the burner tends to leak after a while, so when you've finished cooking and the whole thing has cooled, empty any meths from the burner back into the fuel bottle, then relight the residue in the burner and use it to dry out your kettle and pans. This stops aluminium leaching and avoids that metallic tang you can get in your tea from the first boil of the kettle. Burning off the meths residue also avoids leakage of Bitrex from the meths into your kettle - Bitrex is not good in tea - or anything else.3 Don't use the stove in the back of your car or in your tent - a nudge or hungover shaky hand can cause meths spillage below the burner which will result in a surprisingly vigorous fire, probably when you are least prepared for one. My wife nearly cooked our Kangoo that way. The Trangia is for outdoors use only.4 Point the holes in the base at the wind - the stove then works even in quite a vigorous breeze.5 Put the frying pan on to the boiling pan as a lid. This speeds up cooking significantly, especially in frosty conditions.6 500ml of meths can be bought for between £1.50 and £2.50 (cheaper at hardware shop decorating departments than at camping shops) and lasts for about 5 days of personal brewing up and making dinner. The fuel bottle holds 1 litre so that's enough for at least a week's average tea drinking.7 On level ground you can pre-heat the contents of pan 2 by placing it on to the frying pan lid of pan 1. So you can warm up the Bog a bit while the spag is cooking and have the sauce hot enough very soon after the spag is cooked.Happy camping!

I used my Trangia 25 to camp out in the Lake District in cold weather, down to freezing. I did not have any problem using the stove, it was light, easy to pack, tough and did its job well. I wish I had known about the water-with-fuel mix trick before my first cooking attempt but that was my fault for not reading the instructions. 10% water in with the fuel cuts down on the soot you get on the bottom of the pan - don't forget this!If you are getting one of these then consider the Trangia fuel bottle too, or some similar system.
